Modern pewter can be washed by hand in hot, sudsy water, rinsed, and dried thoroughly with a soft
cloth. Do not over clean antique pewter. It is not meant to look like silver. Do not put in the dishwasher. Do not use any type of abrasive cleaner. It may cause permanant damage.
To clean and polish pewter with an antique or dull finish, rub in one direction with a paste of rotten-
stone and boiled linseed oil. When clean, wash in hot soapy water, rinse, dry and buff. For a lustrous satin finish, rub in one direction with a paste of whiting and denatured alcohol. When clean, wash, rinse, dry and buff.
Pewter may be pitted or stained by acids and other chemicals in some foods, so wash immediately
after using. Do not store food overnight. Be careful not to dent or scratch it. Do not cut directly on the pewter piece. If scratches appear use a pewter polish.
Figurines on display should be protected from accidential damage. Even moving for regular dusting
could cause a small scratch. A glass case would protect them and minimize the need for frequent dusting.
When storing pewter make sure you wrap it in a soft, cotton cloth and keep it in a secure box.
